SEAT hybrid turbos for the Ibiza, Leon and Cupra

GP Turbos in Scunthorpe builds SEAT hybrid turbos and rebuilds standard units, and by his own account Grant Parker has run a SEAT Ibiza Cupra 1.9 TDI as a track car. The Ibiza, Leon, Altea and Toledo use Volkswagen Group engines, and GP Turbos' listings have covered many of them.

By Grant's account, around 2019 his own SEAT Ibiza Cupra 1.9 TDI was in use as a track car, and in August 2018 the old GP Turbos website carried a post titled "Seat Ibiza TDI Track car". SEAT had a category of its own in GP Turbos' online shop from 2019, and it held 15 items by early 2023. Nearly all of them also appeared under Volkswagen, Audi or Škoda, because SEAT's turbocharged models share Volkswagen Group engines. The engine code tells you more about the turbo than the badge does.

Ibiza 1.9 TDI

The Ibiza 1.9 TDI (turbocharged direct injection) with the BKC engine left the factory with a turbo from KKK, which stands for Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch and is now part of BorgWarner, numbered 5439 988 0022. GP Turbos' listings also named the Garrett 751851 as a turbo for this engine. Several hybrids were listed for it. One, listed in 2023, had a bigger turbine wheel and a 360° thrust bearing, and was meant for engines that had already been given the bigger PD130 injectors; PD stands for Pumpe-Düse, the unit-injector system. GP Turbos also listed a hybrid based on the BV39-0012 for the Ibiza, Polo and Fabia TDI.

Leon Cupra and Cupra R

The first-generation Leon Cupra's 1.8T 20v (AUQ) came with a K03S, and the Cupra R's BAM engine with a K04. GP Turbos listed a hybrid for the BAM-engined cars, built on the factory turbo (KKK 5304-970-0022) with an extended-tip billet compressor wheel, a lighter, trimmed turbine wheel and a gas-flowed turbine housing. The second-generation Leon Cupra (BWJ) and Cupra R (CDLD) moved to the 2.0 TFSI, the Volkswagen Group's turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, again with a factory K04. No SEAT-named hybrid for those engines appeared in GP Turbos' listings, so ask about yours.

Diesel Leon, Altea and Toledo

From 2003 to 2009 the Leon, Altea and Toledo 2.0 TDI (engine codes BMM, BMP and BVD) used Garrett turbos from the 765261 and 756867 families, and GP Turbos listed a hybrid for them. The later Leon 2.0 TDI with the CUNA or CUPA engine, shared with the Mk7 Golf GTD, uses a Garrett 821866-series turbo, and that had a hybrid listed too.

Ibiza 1.4 TSI

The Ibiza was one of the cars named on GP Turbos' 1.4 TSI (turbocharged stratified injection) hybrid, which was built on the factory KKK K03.

Factory KKK 5439 988 0022, with the Garrett 751851 also listed for this engine. GP Turbos listed several hybrids, including one based on the factory unit and a build with a bigger turbine wheel and a 360° thrust bearing for engines already running the larger PD130 injectors.

Leon Cupra R Mk1 1.8T 20v (BAM)

A K04 from the factory on the BAM engine, which the Cupra R shares with the Audi S3 and TT 225. GP Turbos' hybrid was built on KKK part 5304-970-0022 with an extended-tip billet compressor wheel, a lighter turbine wheel, a staggered oil seal and a gas-flowed turbine housing.

Leon, Altea and Toledo 2.0 TDI (BMM, BMP, BVD)

Factory Garrett turbos from the 765261 and 756867 families, fitted from 2003 to 2009. GP Turbos listed one hybrid for this engine across SEAT, Volkswagen, Audi and Škoda models, so one unit covered all four badges.

A Garrett 821866-series turbo from the factory, shared with the Mk7 Golf GTD. GP Turbos listed a hybrid for it; if yours is simply worn, a standard rebuild is the other route.

Why does my SEAT's turbo appear on Volkswagen and Audi listings?

Because the engine underneath is the same. SEAT's turbocharged models use Volkswagen Group engines, so the Ibiza's 1.9 TDI shares its turbo with the Volkswagen Polo and the Škoda Fabia, and GP Turbos filed many units under several makes at once. The reliable identifiers are the engine code, three or four letters such as BKC or BAM, and the part number on the turbo. The Volkswagen and Audi pages cover the shared engines from their side.

Can a bigger hybrid go on a standard 1.9 TDI?

GP Turbos' listings made a distinction here. One 2023 hybrid for the BKC engine, with a bigger turbine wheel, was meant for engines that already had the bigger PD130 injectors, while other listings offered smaller hybrids for the same engine. Whichever you choose, the engine calibration has to be matched to the turbo, and the result depends on the rest of the modifications. What should I have ready before asking about a SEAT turbo?

The model and year, the engine code, the part number on the turbo, a list of what has already been changed on the car, and whether you want the turbo restored to standard or upgraded. For a track car, say how it is used as well. Then send an enquiry.
