GP Turbos is a turbo specialist in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, run by Grant Parker. The company, GP Turbos Ltd, was incorporated in 2013, and Grant has been tuning cars since the early 1990s. The work centres on the turbocharger itself: rebuilding worn or damaged turbos, upgrading them into hybrids, and building turbos to a specification for drag, track and fast-road cars.

Each service is outlined below. If you are not sure which one you need, start with turbo problems and what they mean, or get in touch with the make, model and engine, and the part number from the label on the turbo if you can see it.

Services and advice

Turbo rebuilds and reconditioning

A worn or damaged turbo is taken apart, cleaned and inspected, and the parts that wear are renewed. It can go back together to its original specification, or with uprated parts fitted while it is apart. A rebuild only lasts if the reason the turbo failed is put right too, so it helps to tell us what the car was doing before the turbo came off.

  • Rebuilds to original specification
  • Uprated thrust bearing and seals as options
  • Diesel and petrol turbos
  • Advice on what caused the failure

Hybrid turbos

A hybrid keeps your turbo’s original housings and mountings but is rebuilt with larger or stronger internals so it can flow more air. GP Turbos’ past listings include hybrids for Volkswagen group, BMW, Vauxhall, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz engines, many of them diesels. What a hybrid delivers depends on the supporting modifications and a matching calibration.

  • Billet compressor wheels
  • Compressor covers machined to match
  • Trimmed turbine wheels
  • 360° thrust bearings

Hybrid cores

A hybrid core is the centre housing rotating assembly (CHRA) built to hybrid specification: the bearing housing with its shaft, wheels, bearings and seals. It fits your turbo’s existing compressor and turbine housings, so a capable mechanic can build the upgraded turbo up on the original housings.

  • Keeps your original housings
  • Upgraded wheels, bearings and seals
  • For assembly by a capable mechanic

Custom turbo builds

For drag, track and fast-road cars that need a turbo specified around the engine, the fuel, the way the car is used and the rest of the build, including matched pairs for twin-turbo engines. Grant Parker has drag raced his own turbocharged Mk1 Golf, which Engine Swap Depot reported in 2021 was running a GP Turbos billet turbocharger.

  • Specified around your engine and its use
  • Matched pairs for twin-turbo engines
  • Billet compressor wheels with extended tips

Turbo problems explained

Boost loss, blue smoke, oil leaks and new noises often start somewhere other than the turbo. This page explains what each symptom usually points to, which checks come first, and when the turbo itself should come off for inspection and a rebuild.

  • Boost loss and limp mode
  • Blue smoke and oil leaks
  • Whistles, whines and grinding

Information and guides

Longer guides to why turbos fail, oil leaks and blue smoke, turbo noises, losing boost, sticking vanes on variable-geometry turbos, and overspeed. They are written from the published guidance of turbo makers such as Garrett, BorgWarner, MAHLE and Holset.

How it works

STEP 01

Get in touch

Call 07795 165355, email sales@gpturbos.com or use the form below. Give the make, model and engine, and the part number from the turbo’s label if you have it.

STEP 02

Agree what it needs

Together we work out whether the turbo needs a rebuild to standard, an upgrade or a hybrid, what that will cost, and what else the engine needs to go with it.

STEP 03

The work

The turbo is stripped, and worn or damaged parts are renewed or upgraded to the specification you agreed.

STEP 04

Back on the car

Refit it with clean, unrestricted oil lines and prime the oil feed before the first start, as Garrett’s fitting guidance advises. A hybrid also needs a matching calibration.

Not sure which service you need? Tell us the car and what the turbo is doing, and we will point you the right way.
