Ford turbo rebuilds and upgrades

Considering a Ford turbo rebuild or upgrade? Here are the factory turbos on Ford's turbocharged performance engines, and what to send GP Turbos in Scunthorpe.

Three generations of Ford turbo

Ford's turbocharged performance cars fall into three groups: the Sierra and Escort RS Cosworth, with Garrett turbos on the YB engine; the five-cylinder Focus ST and RS of the late 2000s, with BorgWarner turbos; and the EcoBoost engines that followed.

Ford did not feature in GP Turbos' past listings, so an enquiry starts from the turbo's part number and condition. A turbo rebuild returns a turbo to its original specification; a hybrid keeps the original housings, upgrades the internals and needs a calibration matched to it.

GP Turbos is independent of Ford. Model names are used only to identify which cars a turbo fits.

Sierra and Escort RS Cosworth (YB)

The two-wheel-drive Sierra RS Cosworth used a Garrett T3 and the RS500 a larger Garrett T04. The Escort RS Cosworth had a Garrett T3/T04B hybrid, also called the T34, until a smaller T25 replaced it in June 1994.

Focus ST225 and RS Mk2 (2.5 five-cylinder)

The Mk2 Focus ST has a BorgWarner K04 and the Mk2 Focus RS a BorgWarner K16.

Focus RS Mk3 and ST Mk4 (2.3 EcoBoost)

Ford says the Focus RS had its own low-inertia twin-scroll turbo with a larger compressor wheel. The Mk4 ST's turbo has an electronically actuated wastegate, so boost is set by the engine management.

Fiesta ST180 (1.6 EcoBoost)

The Mk7 Fiesta ST uses a BorgWarner KP39.
